The Los Angeles Chargers will turn to rookie cornerback Nikko Reed for his first meaningful playing time this week, as the team navigates multiple injuries in the secondary.
Daniel Popper of The Athletic reported that with Tarheeb Still expected to miss the game, Reed will be the next man up at the nickel position whenever Derwin James is not on the field.
“Reed will get a real first opportunity,” Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter said. “Which I’m really excited about.” (Popper, The Athletic)

The undrafted rookie has impressed coaches and teammates since arriving at training camp, showing confidence, range, and playmaking ability in both practice and preseason action. He also earned a spot on the initial 53-man roster, a testament to his consistent performance and preparation despite limited college hype.
Reed’s opportunity comes at a critical time for the Chargers, who are dealing with injuries to key defensive backs. With Tarheeb Still sidelined, Reed will need to step in and fill the nickel role, a position that demands versatility and quick decision-making.
“I had a little bit of time throughout my day, but really just getting [a chance] to work another day,” Reed said following his roster promotion earlier this month. “Just another day that went by, more work to be done.”
The coaching staff is optimistic about Reed’s ability to handle the responsibility. His knowledge of the defensive schemes and readiness to contribute on special teams should make the transition smoother, even under pressure.
For Reed, this marks a defining moment early in his NFL career. It’s a chance not only to showcase his skills but also to prove that he can be a reliable piece of the Chargers’ defensive rotation when injuries strike.
“Every day is a chance to work, get better, and be ready,” Reed said.
With Reed stepping into the spotlight, Chargers fans will be watching closely to see if the rookie can seize the moment in a key role.
