Chargers GM Tom Telesco: COVID-19 is new opponent we're facing on the field

As the NFL heads towards its season, there are growing concerns about the league's ability to keep players safe in the midst of a global pandemic. It's a concern that Chargers GM Tom Telesco is well aware of, and he says that teams will now be facing two opponents every time they take the field this year.

"I'm optimistic as a league we can do it," Telesco said, via the Associated Press. "We have two opponents -- fighting this virus and whoever our opponent is on Sunday. ... We're not going to eliminate the virus, we know that. We're trying to minimize the risk as much as we can."

While the NBA is finding success in its bubble format, the NFL will be joining the MLB in trying to make a season work in the normal world. It's a risky proposition, as demonstrated by the Miami Marlins' coronavirus outbreak. However, Telesco says that he believes the NFL is prepared for whatever obstacles they might face while trying to complete a season.

"The reality is you can't let your guard down at any time," Telesco said. "We feel a real responsibility to keep everyone safe. The plan has been efficient and we are working through it every day."

Rookies have begun reporting to training camp, with veterans following in the upcoming weeks. If teams are able to make it through camp without any major outbreaks, it would likely cause the general public to look at the situation more favorably. But for now, it's difficult not to be concerned.
