Chargers Receive Top Grade for Mekhi Becton Signing

Ever since the Scouting Combine a few weeks ago, fans have been skeptical of the Los Angeles Chargers free agency plan.

Entering free agency with the second most cap space available in the league, it was a shock to hear them say they wouldn’t be pursuing top-of-the-market players.

While most of the other 31 teams were swinging for the fences in the early stages of free agency, Los Angeles was content with just hitting singles and doubles.

Fans were growing weary of their complacency, but there was finally something to be excited about when the team announced they had signed guard Mekhi Becton.

The Chargers could not have made a better move in free agency considering how dreadful their interior offensive line was last season.

Becton, a former first-round pick, landed in Philadelphia last offseason where he tried to shake off the “bust” label and ended up having the best season of his career.

The jury is still out on Becton because the Eagles’s legendary offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland has a history of squeezing the most he possibly can out of players.

But as things stand right now, most fans and executives agree that this was a slam dunk signing for Los Angeles.

Travis Wakemen of The Sporting News called the signing the “best move the Chargers have made in free agency.”

Since the team already has their tackles of the future, Becton could help solidify the interior and if he performs well, could be a valuable part of the Chargers’ future.

When head coach Jim Harbaugh took over last season, Los Angeles had a major philosophy shift.

Instead of asking their star quarterback Justin Herbert to air it out 30 times every game, they put much more focus on their run game.

the It could not be clearer with the Becton signing that the Chargers are fully leaning into that identity.

The team signed running back Najee Harris who is a between-the-tackles power runner.

And with three mammoths on the offensive line, the Chargers could be physically terrorizing opponents all season long
