The Los Angeles Chargers entered the 2025 season with high expectations for their offense, surrounding Justin Herbert with a mix of veteran and rookie talent. Among those additions was tight end Tyler Conklin, brought in for his pass-catching ability. Yet six weeks into the season, a new player is forcing a shift in the offensive hierarchy: rookie Oronde Gadsden II.

Gadsden Emerges as a Chargers Fan Favorite

Is Jim Harbaugh The Real Life Ted Lasso?

Gadsden, a fifth-round pick, didn’t see immediate action, serving as a healthy scratch until injuries opened the door. Once active, he quickly proved his NFL readiness. Against the Miami Dolphins in Week 6, Gadsden hauled in seven catches for 68 yards, setting career highs despite an early fumble. Head coach Jim Harbaugh praised the rookie’s resilience, noting how he responded to the turnover. “He made a mistake, but he bounced back,” Harbaugh said. “That’s exactly what we want from him.”

In contrast, Conklin struggled to make an impact. Across six games, the veteran has recorded just five catches for 83 yards. Errors—like dropping passes, miscommunications on routes, and a failed fourth-and-short conversion—have compounded his challenges. In Week 6, Conklin played just three offensive snaps and didn’t record a target, signaling a clear shift in the Chargers’ plans.

A Changing of the Chargers Guard

With Will Dissly returning from injury and Gadsden excelling, the Chargers are witnessing a generational shift at tight end. Dissly contributed two catches for 18 yards in the Dolphins game, but it’s Gadsden’s consistent performance that has made the biggest impression. His snap count hit an all-time high of 47 in Week 6, more than any other tight end on the roster.

Conklin, who was expected to be a major offensive weapon, now faces the possibility of being traded. Analysts suggest the Chargers could seek a fifth- or sixth-round pick in return or even package him in a trade to address depth issues at running back, following injuries to Najee Harris and Omarion Hampton.

The Future at Tight End

Gadsden’s rise illustrates the Chargers’ philosophy of rewarding performance and potential. He has not only earned the trust of Harbaugh and the coaching staff but also energized the fanbase, proving that a rookie can immediately shake up the established order. As Los Angeles continues its 4-2 start, one thing is clear: the tight end position is evolving, and Gadsden is firmly at the center of that change.
