Chicago Bears free up some much-needed wiggle room, giving the front office flexibility for in-season roster moves and spending

As the NFL prepares for the first week of the 2025 regular season, a few teams have made some flexible cap maneuvering in order to free up some space for in-season spending and other potential roster moves down the road.

The Chicago Bears made such a move on Wednesday by restructuring cornerback Jaylon Johnson's contract to free up $8 million in available cap space.

Prior to this move, the Bears had just over $1.5 million in available cap space. Teams usually like to head into the season with $4-5 million in cap space for any in-season signings that need to be made. This move gives Chicago plenty of cap to work with over the coming weeks.

Ryan Poles is keeping a short-list of player acquisitions to keep tabs on

Having an active front office during the season is just as important as having an active front office during the offseason. The Bears plan to keep tabs on various ways to upgrade the roster throughout the season and will be ready to make a move if any major injuries were to occur in-season.

"We'll always continue to monitor the league in terms of calls with trades, waiver claims to see is there any way to help our football team get better," Poles explained last week.

Heading into Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings, the Bears have two positions in particular that have already been dealing with a few injuries: RB and DE.

At running back, Roschon Johnson and Kyle Monangai have dealt with injuries that forced them to miss time in the preseason, leaving D'Andre Swift as the only healthy back on the roster. Although, the coaching staff doesn't seem to considered about the extent of those two situations.

At defensive end, the Bears suffered a big blow to the depth when second-year Austin Booker was placed on the injured reserve with a designation to return after Week 4 due to a knee injury suffered against the Buffalo Bills. Without Booker, the Bears are down to four players off the edge in Montez Sweat, Dayo Odeyingbo, Dominique Robinson, and Daniel Hardy. It's worth noting former New Orleans Saints second-round pick Isaiah Foskey is scheduled to work out with the team this week.

Having the extra spending money will go a long way toward upgrading the roster and making sure positional depth stays at a solid level throughout the season.
