The Chicago Bears encountered an unexpected complication during Thursday’s training camp practice when veteran left tackle Braxton Jones left the field early after appearing to suffer an injury.
Jones, who has started 44 games at left tackle across his first four NFL seasons, has been the clear leader in the team’s ongoing competition at the position.
Through the opening stretch of camp he has taken the majority of first-team repetitions, even as the Bears continue to rotate in Jedrick Wills Jr. and Kiran Amegadjie.
According to ESPN reporter Courtney Cronin, the setback occurred during one-on-one drills against edge defender Austin Booker.
“During 1-on-1s, Braxton Jones looked like he got hurt on his second rep vs. Austin Booker,” Cronin wrote on X. “He had a visible look of pain on his face and like he was fighting back tears. He went back in for one rep and then went into the building with trainer Andre Tucker.”
The timing is particularly unwelcome. Jones entered the offseason as a key piece of the offensive line that will be charged with protecting quarterback Caleb Williams, whose blindside security remains a priority heading into the 2026 season.
The Bears open the year on Sept. 13, leaving limited time to evaluate alternatives if Jones is forced to miss significant practice time or the early portion of the regular season.
While the full extent of the injury has not been publicly detailed, the visible discomfort and the decision to leave the field with the training staff signal a development the coaching staff will monitor closely.
Jones has long been viewed as a steady, durable presence, and any absence would force the team to accelerate evaluations of the other candidates competing for the starting left tackle job.
For a franchise still building around a young quarterback, stability along the offensive line is essential. Thursday’s episode serves as an early reminder that even the most settled positions can shift quickly once pads come on and contact intensifies.
The Bears will now wait for further medical updates to determine how significantly Jones’s status affects their plans for the remainder of camp and beyond.
This also isn’t the first major injury Chicago has endured in training camp, as defensive back Coby Bryant suffered a knee injury that will keep him sidelined for 8-10 weeks.
