The Kansas City Chiefs found their Tyrann Mathieu replacement on Monday when the team agreed to a three-year deal with former Houston Texans safety Justin Reid, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Reid, 25, was a third-round pick in 2018 and started 53 of a possible 65 games during his four seasons with Houston. He has seven career interceptions with two forced fumbles and two sacks. Per Schefter, the contract will pay Reid $31.5 million over the next three seasons with $20 million guaranteed.
Kansas City found a reliable starter at safety when it dug through Houston's free agents three years ago and signed Mathieu. In three seasons with the Chiefs, he earned two All-Pro nods and two trips to the Pro Bowl.
But the Chiefs are reportedly set to allow Mathieu to reach free agency Wednesday, and a deal in place with Reid appears to confirm those plans.
Kansas City finished the 2021 regular season 27th in total defense, but allowed the eighth fewest points thanks largely to their propensity for takeaways.
