Preseason football is officially underway for the Kansas City Chiefs, and while Andy Reid's team would lose 20-17 to the Arizona Cardinals, there will be plenty to take out of the game.
Patrick Mahomes and the starters got some reps, while rookies and players on the roster bubble got their chance to impress the coaching staff in an attempt to get more snaps in the last two preseason games.
But while Reid was happy with what the starters were able to do, once the team began to change to backups and younger players, things got rather wobbly.
And Reid wasn't happy with one element in particular.
“There were some good things even though it didn't come off that way, but the ones I thought played well when they were in, they were sharp," Reid said. “After that was too sloppy, too many penalties going backwards when you shouldn't be offensively and going forward with the penalties we had defensively.
"So, we've got to take care of that. ... 10 penalties for 108 yards, that's a good rushing day for a team. So, you can't give that up with penalties.”
The 10 penalties are a symptom of it being preseason football and everyone trying to get back into that live game groove, and it is clear the Chiefs still have some work to do.
Overall, it was a good first hit out for the defending AFC champs, but Reid will want a better performance against the Seattle Seahawks in the next preseason game...and he will want far fewer penalties, too.
