Chiefs Ex Reveals ‘Disconnect’ Reason for Breakup

The Kansas City Chiefs have seen several losses across the roster amid the start of free agency. Strapped for cap space, the team has not had much of a choice but to let some of their players up and down the depth chart walk away.

Safety Justin Reid is among that group, taking a three-year, $31.5 million deal with the New Orleans Saints. Thus far, that marks the biggest offseason loss for Kansas City.

But some additional losses have come about as well, including that of linebacker Josh Uche. The Chiefs traded for Uche midway through the 2024 season though he never found a place in the regular rotation.

Uche has since chosen a new home, signing with the Philadelphia Eagles through the first wave of free agency. This week, he finally spoke out on his time with Kansas City and shared his reasons for why things did not work out.

“I’m not too sure from a personnel standpoint or a schematic standpoint where there was a disconnect. At the end of the day, I did what was asked of me to help the team win.

"But as a football player, you want to be out there with your teammates and your brothers. It was a situation where I was coming in the middle of the season, coming in late, and the stars didn’t fully align.”

While the timing did not work out with the Chiefs, Uche certainly welcomes himself into a real opportunity with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Philadelphia had one of the most dominant defenses in the league under Vic Fangio. Despite some losses of their own, they project to continue their excellence into the 2025 season.

Last season, Zack Baun signed with the team under similar circumstances and became a star at the linebacker spot. Perhaps Uche should not expect that lightning in a bottle type of success, but there is a clear vision for him to seek out improvement in his game.

As for the Chiefs, they have made a commitment to linebacker Nick Bolton, keeping a familiar face front and center on the defense. Offensively, they also retained Trey Smith and added Jaylon Moore in hopes of restructuring protection around Patrick Mahomes.

Kansas City had to sacrifice some pieces as they retool their roster this offseason, but they are not the only victim of those circumstances.
