Patrick Mahomes has accomplished more than most NFL quarterbacks could dream of during his eight-year NFL career. As he enters his ninth year as the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback (eighth as a starter), he has a chance to add to his résumé.
According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Mahomes can break two passing touchdown records on Friday night against the Los Angeles Chargers, who the Chiefs open the season against in Brazil. Smith wrote that, "Mahomes has 291 touchdown passes in his NFL career (245 in the regular season and 46 in the postseason), and can break the records both for the most in his first nine NFL seasons and for the most before turning 30 years old."
Smith continued by mentioning that the current record for a player's most touchdown passes in their first nine seasons belongs to Peyton Manning, who threw 293 touchdowns in his first nine years in the NFL. Mahomes needs two passing touchdowns to tie the record and three to break Manning's record, one that has stayed in place since 2006.
As for the other record (the one involving Mahomes throwing the most touchdowns before turning 30), Smith wrote, "Mahomes’ 245 regular-season touchdown passes are tied with Dan Marino for the most by any player before turning 30. Mahomes turns 30 on September 17, so he needs to throw just one touchdown pass in either Week One or Week Two to move ahead of Marino and own the record by himself."
So, there you have it, Chiefs fans. If Mahomes throws for at least one touchdown pass in Kansas City's first two games this season, he'll pass Dan Marino in that stat. Feels extremely doable.
There are stats for everything in the NFL and if that's the case, Chiefs fans hope that Mahomes just continues to shatter the records and continue adding to his obvious Hall of Fame résumé.
