Kansas City Chiefs fans are used to their team being the villains of the NFL and, truth be told, it's not a bad thing. If you're a villain in any league, it likely means that your team is at the top of the food chain, which the Chiefs very much are after winning three of the last six Super Bowls and appearing in five.
It's not easy to be as dominant as the Chiefs have been since the 2018 season. Even just making the playoffs every year isn't guaranteed with the injuries that can take place and severely impact a team's season. The Dan Patrick Show took this a step further on its Tuesday show and discussed which playoff team from the 2024 season wouldn't make the playoffs in 2025. Seton O'Connor, one of the Danettes, dropped arguably the hottest of takes when he said the Chiefs.
"My thought was the Chiefs," O'Connor said, which was met with a lot of shocked responses from Dan Patrick and the rest of the Danettes. "I think the Chiefs could miss the playoffs this year. I think they had a lot of one-score wins last year and usually when you squeak by opponents, I feel like that usually drops off rather than gets better, especially when your key players have aged even more. Travis Kelce kind of limped to the finish last season. Patrick Mahomes [is] certainly getting older. I wouldn't be surprised if the Chiefs fell off this year."
Everyone is obviously entitled to their own opinion but this feels like quite the stretch from O'Connor. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on his part (and he's not the only one who would be elated if this happened) but it feels like the Chiefs should absolutely get the benefit of the doubt here.
Just like how the Chiefs should continue to be the favorites in the AFC West until another team proves they can take it from them, as long as the Chiefs keep making the playoffs, why doubt that they won't? Yes, Kelce and Mahomes are getting older but that's how life works. Both guys helped the team reach the Super Bowl this past season so what's to stop them from doing so in 2025?
As for the one-score games, that's something the Chiefs need to get better at and not let it come down to the final play but as Dan Patrick pointed out, they've been in that situation before and know how to win in those situations. That experience is very important and something that can help them when they find themselves in those games.
We've been hearing for years about how the AFC just keeps getting tougher yet the Chiefs continue to find ways to get to the Super Bowl. Maybe the Chiefs finally get dethroned in the division this year, but to predict they won't make the postseason is absurd. For that to happen, a slew of big-time injuries would have to occur and even then, Andy Reid is the best coach in the league. He could still lead this team to a playoff berth even in those circumstances.
This is just another example of someone already trying to write the end of the Chiefs' storybook run. Get used to it if you haven't already, Chiefs fans and take it in stride. There's a reason people hate the Chiefs and it's because of how successful they've been so just sit back and enjoy the ride.
