Nobody knew it at the time but when the Kansas City Chiefs moved from the 27th pick to the 10th pick to take Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the NFL landscape was about to change drastically. It took Mahomes just one full year to show what kind of NFL quarterback he could be, as he threw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns during his first year as the starting signal-caller and helped lead K.C. to the AFC Championship Game for the first time since the Joe Montana years.
Before getting to that point though, the Chiefs had to ensure they landed the quarterback of their dreams. Brett Veach famously was one of the driving forces in the Chiefs selecting Mahomes and he revealed a cool story about the draft on The Kingdom, a new ESPN documentary about the Kansas City Chiefs.
In a scene from The Kingdom, Veach reveals that his daughter was actually a big inspiration to Veach ensuring he got his guy on draft night. His daughter was so motivated to get Mahomes because of a scene from the movie Draft Day.
"We had watched [Draft Day] weeks prior to the draft and so, [Veach's daughter] did see that one part of Draft Day where Costner's character had the name written down," Veach recalled. "I was just getting to leave and she hands me the card... it said 'Pat no matter what'. There's nothing more special than your daughter writing that."
The documentary showed the note Veach got from his daughter too with the now famous 'Pat no matter what' letter framed. There are probably plenty of Chiefs fans who would love to own that piece of franchise history, as drafting Mahomes changed everything for the organization.
Since Mahomes took over as the starter in 2018, the Chiefs have made the AFC Championship Game every single year and been to the Super Bowl all but two times. Considering the Chiefs used to always be one-and-done in the playoffs every time they'd get there, having a quarterback who could take them to these heights was massive and we've seen the payoff of that.
It sounds like Chiefs fans not only have Veach to thank for landing the team its best quarterback in franchise history but his daughter and the movie Draft Day as well. Thanks to all who contributed to helping the Chiefs become public enemy number one in the NFL.
