The NFL Draft is already one of the most unpredictable nights in sports—but according to Kansas City Chiefs GM Brett Veach, this year could take things to another level.
Speaking ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, Veach didn’t hold back when previewing what fans should expect: “There’ll probably be a lot of trades.”
That simple statement has massive implications.
This year’s draft class is widely viewed as unusual compared to recent years. There’s no clear depth at quarterback—only one signal-caller, Fernando Mendoza, is expected to go early—while many of the top prospects play non-premium positions like linebacker, safety, and running back.

That lack of elite, franchise-defining talent at key positions is exactly what creates chaos. Teams aren’t locked into must-have players at the top, which opens the door for aggressive movement up and down the board.
Veach explained that the grades across multiple position groups—offensive tackles, edge rushers, and wide receivers—are extremely close this year. That means a player projected in the top 10 could easily slide, while someone mocked later could suddenly rise. In other words, draft boards are all over the place.
And when teams don’t agree? That’s when the phones start ringing.
The Chiefs themselves are in a prime position to be right in the middle of the action. Kansas City holds two first-round picks—No. 9 and No. 29—which gives them flexibility to either move up for a target or trade back and stack assets.
If history tells us anything, Veach won’t sit still. Since becoming GM, he’s built a reputation for being aggressive—especially around draft time. Whether it’s moving up for a player or making calculated deals, the Chiefs are rarely passive.
But this isn’t just about Kansas City.
Across the league, multiple teams hold extra first-round picks, and with talent evaluations so tight, the entire first round could turn into a chess match. Instead of a predictable top 10, fans might see constant movement, surprise selections, and teams jumping all over the board.
Simply put, this isn’t shaping up to be a normal draft—it’s shaping up to be a frenzy.
And if Veach is right, Thursday night won’t just be about who gets picked—it’ll be about who makes the boldest move.
