When talking about what the Chiefs need heading into the 2026 season, you will get a lot of conflicting answers.
One might look at their offensive line and think that the Chiefs need a replacement for the departing Jawaan Taylor. Others will want Kansas City to add an edge rusher to complement George Karlaftis and make things easier for Chris Jones in the middle. You can even point to their wide receiver room and say that the Chiefs badly need to add a WR1-level threat to their offense.
However, there’s one area that needs the most work, and its the one that was completely decimated this offseason. The Chiefs’ secondary was gutted this offseason. The Trent McDuffie trade was the starting point of the position group’s demise. With key players like Bryan Cook, Joshua Williams, and Jaylen Watson leaving, Kansas City’s secondary is now a tattered mess.
The draft is there for the Chiefs to help address their issues, yes. That being said, Kansas City will need a savvy veteran who will be able to help guide the young secondary players. Luckily for them, a former Pro Bowl cornerback was just recently made available for a trade.
It was reported recently that the Colts and cornerback Kenny Moore have mutually agreed to find a trade. A nine-year veteran in the NFL, Moore has spent his entire career in Indianapolis. The veteran cornerback has a Pro Bowl selection to his name in 2021 and was an excellent corner for the team in his career.
Last season, Moore had an interception (that he returned for a touchdown), two forced fumbles, six passes defended, 55 combined tackles, and 1.5 sacks. It’s a solid season, but it did seem like Moore did not fit with Colts DC Lou Anarumo’s schemes. He started in just seven of the 14 games he played, injuries also playing a part in his limited availability.
With nine solid seasons under his belt, Moore feels like he can still contribute towards a championship. Unfortunately for him, the Colts are trying to get younger, and Sauce Gardner’s mid-season arrival pushes him further down the depth chart. Adam Schefter reports that Moore is likely to get traded on draft night.
“I think that you will see a slew of moves made draft weekend,” Schefter said. “To me, it wouldn’t surprise, (if) ‘Day 2’ or ‘Day 3,’ we saw Kenny Moore dealt at that point in time to a team that likes him, that didn’t get a slot cornerback that it wanted.”
The Chiefs will happily swoop in to get Moore this offseason. Spagnuolo’s wacky defensive scheme requires every member of the defense to be able to blitz the quarterback. That is one of Moore’s best traits as a nickel cornerback, one that was not fully utilized last season. Moore is also excellent against the run, grading out as one of the best run defenders amongst all corners last season at 84.4 according to PFF.
The price for Moore will likely be a Day 3 pick, something that the Chiefs have an abundance of. Five of their nine picks in the 2026 NFL Draft are from rounds 4 to 7, including three fifth-round picks. Trading one of these late-round picks for a veteran presence will be a massive boon for the Chiefs.
Yes, the Chiefs will likely target a cornerback in the first-round of this year’s draft. LSU’s Mansoor Delane or Tennessee’s Jermod McCoy are probably getting picked up by Kansas City if they’re available at pick #9. However, with the many elite wide receivers on other teams, KC will need another veteran presence in the secondary to help out their top cornerback.
