Rashee Rice and the Kansas City Chiefs are in deep trouble right now. They needed a win on Sunday to keep their playoff hopes alive, but they ended up losing to the Houston Texans, 20-10. Kansas City has not been eliminated from playoff contention just yet, but Sunday’s defeat delivered a considerable blow to its chances to secure a postseason berth.
Rice played his part for the Chiefs in Sunday’s game. The third-year wide receiver caught a game-high four passes from quarterback Patrick Mahomes for 34 yards. It was far from enough to help lead Kansas City to victory, though.
Rice took a big hit in the late in the third quarter from Texans safety Jalen Pitre. After catching a pass from Mahomes, Rice hit the deck hard after getting clobbered by Pitre. The Chiefs WR took a bit of time to get up, and for a second it looked like he might have sustained some sort of injury.
Rice was fine, though, and he was able to get to his feet and walk away as if nothing had happened. There’s no denying, however, that it was one of the biggest hits of the night for both teams.

A new report from Mike Florio of NBC’s Pro Football Talk surfaced on Tuesday. According to Florio, the Chiefs never bothered to have Rice checked for a potential concussion.
“Per the Chiefs, Rice did not enter the sideline medical tent and it was not reported that Rice was placed into the concussion protocol during the game,” Florio reported. “The NFL has not responded to an inquiry regarding whether a concussion evaluation was ordered for Rice, or whether one was performed.”
Despite the massive hit, Rice looked alright. It also doesn’t seem like he said anything to the trainers after the incident either. Nevertheless, it’s not the players’ job to assess a potential concussion. That crucial responsibility falls in the hands of the doctors and the spotters. Apparently, nobody on the Chiefs staff thought it was necessary to check Rice for a potential brain injury.
At the end of the day, Rice was not diagnosed with a head injury, and he has not been placed on the league’s concussion protocol. However, this could very well be because the team supposedly made the questionable decision during the game not to have him checked in the first place.
Rice, who’s recorded 46 catches for 520 yards and five touchdowns in seven games played this season, is expected to be available for Kansas City’s next game. This will be on Sunday against their divisional rivals, the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Chiefs must win that game to keep their playoff hopes alive because there is a scenario in which a loss will lead to their elimination from the postseason.
