The Kansas City Chiefs got some positive news from future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce this week. Kelce informed the team of his plans to return and play out the final year of his contract.
Chiefs' general manager Brett Veach first delivered the decision to reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine this week, nothing that Kelce was "fired up" about returning.
“We left it as, he’d be back and we’re excited to get him back and get him going,” Veach said.
This is certainly a plus for all involved. Kelce gets a chance to help his team on their quest for redemption and go out better than he would have following the Chiefs' Super Bowl LIX collapse.
But as all good franchises do, the Chiefs had a backup plan in the works just in case Kelce decided to hang it up. Standout Miami prospect Elijah Arroyo confirmed that Kansas City leadership met with him at the combine this week.
Call it a "reveal.'' Call it an "emergency plan.'' It is certain a sign of the times when your superstar tight end is 35.
Arroyo does have a noteworthy injury history that he discussed with the franchise, but more importantly he is one of several tantalizing tight end prospects available in this year's draft.
The Miami product has received a first-round grade in some early mock drafts, projecting him available at pick No. 31. It is not guaranteed he will come off the board on day one given the position's vast talent pool this year.
Nonetheless, the Chiefs had a course of action had Kelce retired, but they will be glad to have him back. His return does not prevent a potential tight end selection later in the draft, but does free up some options for the Chiefs with their first-round pick.
While Kansas City gets one more year out of their veteran, they will need to add more pass catchers this offseason. The lack of reliable talent at the position cost them in their Super Bowl loss and a number of their receivers are set to hit free agency.
Perhaps they now look to use their first-round pick to add some talent in that phase of the offense. Regardless, the rest of the league will have to manage the dangerous Kelce-Patrick Mahomes combo for yet another season.
