Chiefs' Trent McDuffie Shares Key Contract Update on Monday

The Kansas City Chiefs have already spent big bucks to keep one of their cornerstones around for the long run. They signed G Trey Smith to a four-year extension worth a whopping $94 million.

Now, they want to do right by Trent McDuffie, who's about to enter his fourth year in the league and has established himself as one of the best shutdown corners in the league.

However, while other players threaten to hold out or request a trade, McDuffie isn't losing any sleep. In a sit-down with Kay Adams, he gushed about the way Patrick Collins, his agent has handled things.

McDuffie is optimistic about a contract extension

"I know when it really comes to this contract stuff and everybody's asking questions like, 'where's your head at' and stuff, I actually feel like my agent, our relationship has grown so much in the past three years, and that's one of my favorite human beings on planet Earth. I feel like I have the best agent ever," McDuffie started.

The four-year pro said that he doesn't want to worry about his contract because he knows he's eventually going to get the money he deserves:

"He keeps me up to date, like if they talk at 6:00 am, we'll be in a call at 6:01 am, telling me about everything they talked about. And because of that, I feel like I've been truly allowed to focus on ball," McDuffie continued. "Honestly, I'm not even worried about the contract, like if I get paid, I get paid. I know that's coming and, right now, I don't even want to worry about it. I wanna really just focus on doing what I can for this team and letting all that contract and the money stuff be handled by the person I pay to do that."

McDuffie is looking at a big payday

The cornerback market has gone exponentially up in recent years, and especially this offseason. Shortly after the Houston Texans gave Derek Stingley Jr. a three-year, $90 million contract extension, the New York Jets set a new record with Sauce Gardner, giving him a four-year, $120.4 million contract extension.

Sauce Gardner's deal includes roughly $85.6 million guaranteed. So, if the Chiefs follow the recent league-wide trend of taking the last deal as a baseline to make a deal of their own, McDuffie could be looking at north of $30 million per season in his new contract.

The Chiefs have rallied behind their defense to reach three Super Bowls in a row, winning two of them. And while Patrick Mahomes will continue to steal most of the headlines, players like McDuffie have played as big a role as him in their recent success.
