Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown has been fined $12,172 by the NFL for unsportsmanlike conduct during the team’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The fine comes after Brown slapped Jaguars cornerback Jourdan Lewis during a tense moment in the first quarter of Monday night’s game.

The incident occurred midway through the first quarter. After a play, Brown and Lewis became entangled, with Lewis grabbing Brown’s jersey. The interaction escalated when Brown confronted Lewis face-to-face, first with words and then with an open-handed slap to Lewis’s helmet.
Officials on the field immediately threw a flag, penalizing Brown for unnecessary roughness. The 15-yard penalty pushed the Chiefs back, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes managed to overcome the setback, leading the team on a 72-yard drive that culminated in a touchdown pass to Travis Kelce.
Despite the penalty, many fans and observers on social media questioned why Brown was not ejected from the game for throwing a clear blow at an opponent. The play was reviewed, but officials determined the action did not warrant an ejection.
Following a review of the incident, the NFL’s Football Operations Department decided on a financial penalty. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the fine amount, noting that Brown was the only player penalized or fined for the scuffle.
The fine falls under the league’s guidelines for unsportsmanlike conduct. Had the league deemed the action as “fighting,” Brown could have faced a much steeper fine, which starts at $40,686 for a first offense. This was the first penalty called on the veteran receiver this season.
The Chiefs’ 31-28 loss to the Jaguars was marked by a high number of penalties, with the team committing 13 in total. The game ended in a dramatic fashion, with a last-second touchdown by Jaguars’ quarterback Trevor Lawrence sealing the victory for Jacksonville.
