Chop Robinson’s 5 Concussions Raise Concern for Dolphins

Miami Dolphins edge rusher Chop Robinson appears to be moving closer to returning to the field, but new information regarding his concussion history raises a much bigger concern than whether he will play against the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday.

According to Palm Beach Post Dolphins reporter Joe Schad, Robinson has now suffered five concussions dating back to his college career.

That is a troubling number for a player who is only 23 years old and in his third NFL season.

Robinson suffered his latest concussion during Miami’s practice on September 16 while the Dolphins were staying in California between games against the Las Vegas Raiders and San Francisco 49ers. The injury forced Robinson to miss Miami’s Week 2 loss to San Francisco.

It was already known that this was Robinson’s third concussion in roughly the past calendar year. He suffered two concussions during the 2025 season, with each ultimately costing him playing time.

Now, Schad’s report that Robinson has suffered five dating back to college puts his situation into an even broader perspective.

Robinson Returns to Practice

Robinson had encouraging news this week.

Head coach Jeff Hafley announced Wednesday that Robinson would return to practice as he continued progressing through the NFL’s concussion protocol. Robinson participated fully and was reportedly wearing his normal aqua practice jersey rather than a red non-contact jersey, indicating that he had advanced significantly through the protocol.

When Hafley was specifically asked about Robinson having three concussions in the past calendar year and the level of concern surrounding that history, the Dolphins head coach deferred to the medical staff.

“That’s more for the medical team,” Hafley said. “He is going to be able to practice today. That’s where he’s at right now. So we’ll keep those medical questions for the medical people.”

That’s understandable. Decisions regarding Robinson’s health and clearance belong with Robinson and the medical professionals evaluating him.

Still, five reported concussions at this stage of his football career are impossible to ignore.

Bigger Than Sunday’s Game

From a purely football standpoint, Miami desperately needs Robinson.

The Dolphins drafted him 21st overall in 2024, expecting him to develop into a cornerstone defensive player. Robinson recorded 10 sacks over his first two NFL seasons, and Miami entered 2026 hoping he would take another significant step forward.

His absence against San Francisco was particularly noticeable for a Dolphins defense searching for consistent pressure off the edge.

But this situation has moved beyond simply wondering when Robinson will get his next sack.

The frequency of the concussions makes his long-term health and availability a significant issue to monitor. Miami also has a major contractual decision approaching. After this season, the Dolphins will have to determine whether to exercise the fifth-year option on Robinson’s rookie contract.

His talent will certainly factor into that evaluation, but availability inevitably matters when teams make long-term roster decisions.

Miami Shouldn’t Rush Anything

Robinson returning to practice is a positive development, but there should be no urgency to get him back onto the field simply because Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are coming to Hard Rock Stadium.

The Dolphins need Robinson.

But Robinson’s health matters far more than one September game.

If he’s cleared through the NFL’s concussion protocol and medical professionals determine he’s ready to play, Robinson could provide an enormous boost to Miami’s defense.

The larger concern, however, isn’t Week 3.

It’s what five reported concussions could mean for Robinson moving forward.

At only 23, Robinson should have a long football career ahead of him. For Miami and Robinson, making sure his health is protected has to take precedence over everything else.
