Christian McCaffrey Receives Surprising Injury Update For Week 1

Following a year that saw him miss all but four games last season, Christian McCaffrey's injury designation on Friday had much of the NFL world concerned.

The three-time Pro Bowler popped up on the injury report as a limited participant in Thursday's practice before being held out completely in the Niners' final preparations before this weekend's opener vs. the Seahawks.

CMC is currently listed as questionable heading into Sunday's action. But according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, there's increasing optimism that San Francisco's star could be a go for tomorrow's 4:05 PM ET start.

Injury strikes again

After helping lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl LVIII two seasons ago behind 2,023 scrimmage yards and 21 total touchdowns, injuries have once again become the story for the former Stanford star.

The two-time All-Pro has only played appeared in three full campaigns across eight National Football League seasons, and three times he's suited up for less than half the schedule.

Staying healthy has pretty much been the only thing standing in the way of C-Mac and a Hall of Fame-level career. And even with the time he's missed, he'll still likely get votes to join the greats in Canton.

As far as joining his team on Sunday, it doesn't sound like the calf should get in the way of that — which has to be great news for the San Francisco faithful.

McCaffrey: 'I feel great'

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media: "49ers RB Christian McCaffrey is questionable with a calf injury, but signs are pointing to him playing vs the Seahawks," the insider reported.

Adding, "McCaffrey was running around on the side during practice Friday and was optimistic to reporters. Barring a setback, it’s likely he’ll go."

Speaking to reporters ahead of the weekend, McCaffrey downplayed the severity of the injury and said he feels "great" going into the Week 1 tilt.

"Nothing serious," the 29-year-old said (via The Athletic's Vic Tafur). "I feel great where I'm at. Unfortunately, when you have the injury history that I have, sometimes when you don't practice things get blown out of proportion. Like I said, I feel great."

"At the end of the day, if you can play, you play in the game," he concluded. "It's as simple as that."

McCaffrey also said that he's completely forgotten about last year and the injuries that held him back. His sole focus is on being the best CMC he could be for the Niners in 2025, with a newly-paid Brock Purdy and a very winnable schedule on paper.
