CJ Gardner-Johnson’s attempt to spit at an opponent will cost him some time on the field.
The NFL announced Monday that the Buffalo Bills defensive back will be suspended for one game during the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. The league statement referred to the incident as “an act of unsportsmanlike conduct.”

Gardner-Johnson got into it with Brock Bowers, and the exchange culminated in the veteran trying to spit at the Raider tight end ( video here). It was spotted by officials and Gardner-Johnson was subsequently ejected, so the suspension comes on top of that.
A one-game suspension is the usual punishment for this sort of incident, including when there is a technicality. Perhaps Gardner-Johnson’s biggest mistake was not making the move earlier in the game.
