C.J. Stroud gets new warning about future with Texans

As of the morning of June 23, there remained no indication that Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud will receive a multiyear contract extension from the club before the 2026 NFL season gets underway.

ESPN's Dan Graziano shared how the Texans are showing via their actions that Stroud is about to enter a make-or-break campaign regarding his future with the club.

C.J. Stroud's lack of an extension "speaks volumes" about his situation with Texans?

"There are few, if any, teams that are as aggressive and early with their veteran contract extensions as the Texans," Graziano explained. "Stroud's 2023 draftmate, Will Anderson Jr., knows this firsthand, having secured a mammoth extension from Houston this offseason. But Stroud does not have an extension, and this means something. Yes, the Texans picked up [Stroud's] fifth-year option for 2027...it would have been silly not to do so. They have to pay him only $31.6M in total over the next two years. But the hesitancy by this team in particular to extend Stroud when he first became eligible for an extension speaks volumes."

Fair or not, the perception exists that Stroud has regressed after he won Offensive Rookie of the Year for the 2023 season. He was intercepted five times and lost two of five fumbles over his last two playoff games, and he now holds a career postseason record of 3-3.

Meanwhile, whispers suggested throughout the spring that current Philadelphia Eagles starter Jalen Hurts is among the big-name quarterbacks who could be available before the 2027 NFL Draft gets underway. Additionally, next year's draft class is expected to include multiple top-tier quarterback prospects.

C.J. Stroud facing "as much pressure this year as just about any quarterback in the NFL"

Throughout the offseason, Texans general manager Nick Caserio insisted that he and others within the organization are still excited about what Stroud could become as Houston's full-time QB1. Graziano is among those not fully buying such alleged votes of confidence.

"The team can say anything it wants about believing in Stroud and viewing him as its QB of the future," Graziano added. "Absent an extension, though, that's just talk. It's clear the Texans want to see more before committing, and that puts Stroud under as much pressure this year as just about any quarterback in the NFL."
