Cleveland Browns took another loss they couldn’t afford after the Detroit Lions beat them in Week 4
Junfu Han-USA TODAY NETWORK

The Cleveland Browns have a struggling offense and there is no sugarcoating that is the thing that is holding them down and likely will all season. Cleveland is scoring just 14 points per game and that is ranked 31st in the NFL, which is just about at the bottom of the barrel. With the defense playing at a high level on the other side, it’s been a tough watch with the Browns at times. Unfortunately for the Browns, their offense is going to be even less when they are back out there on the gridiron in Week 5.

Cleveland lost a starter against the Detroit Lions

The Browns were taken down 34-10 by the Lions in Week 4 and a short run by rookie RB Quinshon Judkins was the only touchdown for the Browns. Cleveland was outgained 277-249 in total yardage, another example of the defense being good enough to win. Turnovers and special teams errors again hurt the Browns against Detroit. On Monday, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski revealed that the team will be without one of its starting wideouts for weeks.

“Injury front, DeAndre Carter has a knee injury. Cedric Tillman has a hamstring injury,” Stefanski said on Monday. “Those injuries will keep them out in the weeks department. We’ll treat them, see how they recover, but we’ll be without them for a little bit.”

Losing Tillman for weeks is a negative for an offense that already isn’t good enough. The former Tennessee Vols star is in his third year with the Browns and is the No. 2 wide receiver alongside Jerry Jeudy for the Browns offense. Tillman is a big 6-foot-3 target for the Browns and already has a pair of touchdowns this season. Tillman has 11 catches for 106 yards in his four games played and is on track to pass his previous career high of 339 receiving yards that he had in 2024.

Cedric Tillman’s career with the Browns

  • Missed nine games his first two seasons combined
  • Former third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft
  • Best career game against Ravens in 2023 when he caught nine passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns.

Jeudy is struggling for the Browns and rookie WR Isaiah Bond was the best wideout for the Browns against the Lions. With Tillman out for the time being, there is going to be more opportunity for Bond’s role to grow and he took over as the second wideout when Tillman exited against the Lions. Cleveland could use some more from second-year wideout Jamari Thrash in Tillman’s absence as well.

Cleveland wants to run the ball and play tough defense. They’ve been running the ball better since Judkins returned and he has 237 rushing yards in three games played. Still, the Browns have to find more success in the passing game. Cleveland is using plenty of two tight ends with David Njoku and Harold Fannin Jr., look for that to go up even more now. The hope is that Tillman won’t be out long because the Browns had high hopes for the jump he could make this season. Now, there’s a bit of a shadow over that happening.
