The Indianapolis Colts were expected to have one of the most captivating stories of the NFL offseason with their prospective quarterback competition between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones.
Unfortunately for the former, he suffered an injury in the infancy of team activities to the same shoulder he required season-ending surgery on during his rookie season.
The team is cautiously optimistic that Richardson will be back on the field by the start of training camp, but this month and a half that he’s missing in between will be detrimental to his starting chances.
His absence allows Jones to capitalize on taking all the first team reps and he is already taking advantage according to reports.
In 7-on-7s and 11-on-11s, Jones combined to complete 9/13 passes with six touchdowns and no turnovers.
One of Jones’ biggest weaknesses is his deep ball accuracy, but some of the touchdowns he’s thrown in camp so far have been deep balls.
Steichen is rightfully optimistic about his quarterback because it looks like he may have learned a thing or two while with the Minnesota Vikings last year.
Richardson is expected to be back on the field at the start of training camp, so the competition is not over. But, Jones has put himself in great position already by being present and dependable.
