The Indianapolis Colts were expected to have a captivating offseason quarterback competition between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones.
But after the former injured his shoulder a couple weeks ago at OTAs, that battle is looking less likely. Even if it happens, there’s a great possibility that Jones already gained an insurmountable lead in the race.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero has reported that Richardson will be back on the field by training camp, but it doesn’t begin for another month and a half.
Sensing just how much this injury means to his career, the former No. 4 overall pick is doing everything in his power to get back on the field quickly.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen revealed to team media that Richardson is seeking a second opinion from the doctor who worked on his same shoulder during his rookie season.
#Colts HC Shane Steichen says QB Anthony Richardson visited Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles to get a second opinion on his shoulder. Steichen says nothing had changed and the plan is just to rest his shoulder for now.

Unfortunately, there is no new information and the team just has to hope that they get their guy back by training camp to give him a realistic chance of competing for the starting job.
Indianapolis has been adamant that they believe Richardson is the quarterback of the future, but there is a real chance this is the last season he ever spends with the team.
Assuming he doesn’t win the starting job, Richardson will be entering his fourth season after this year and the Colts would likely decline his fifth-year option.
This means that next offseason would be the perfect time to trade him before they have to lose him for nothing in free agency.
This injury isn’t a death sentence for the Florida product, but if he doesn’t get back on the field quickly then his path to NFL success will become much more difficult.
