Commanders Break Fantasy Football Players' Hearts With Week 1 Depth Chart

There hasn't been any hype train in the NFL quite like Washington Commanders running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt's this offseason.

When the Commanders drafted him in the seventh round of this year's draft, he seemed to be facing an uphill battle for a role on the team.

They still had Austin Ekeler and Brian Robinson set to take on the largest roles at the position, Jeremy McNichols was still on the roster after averaging 4.7 yards per carry last season, and Chris Rodriguez was brought back after averaging 4.9 yards per carry during his first two seasons.

Then Croskey-Merritt got to camp and the positive reports began flowing.

It quickly made him a player to keep an eye on late in fantasy drafts.

When the Commanders eventually traded Robinson, the hype really got out of control.

Anybody who had drafted him before rumors of a Robinson trade began felt like they got n absolute steal and fantasy players were suddenly becoming desperate to land Croskey-Merritt. Over the weekend, he was selected in the middle of round two of a rookie draft in one of my dynasty leagues.

It seems those expecting Croskey-Merritt to take over their fantasy leagues may need to wait a bit.

The Commanders released their Week 1 depth chart today and Croskey-Merritt was listed as their fourth running back.

Week 1 depth charts are not necessarily indicative of what we should expect for the rest of the season, especially when it comes to rookies.

However, it may mean that the hype here went just a bit too far.

Croskey-Merritt was likely still a solid value for anybody who got him when he was still a sleeper. His college profile made him hard to evaluate because a strong eligibility issue cost him his year at Arizona after he earned All-Mountain West honors in 2023.

If he had gotten to play in 2024, he might not have dropped all the way to round seven even in a loaded running back class.

The Commanders' backfield remains one to monitor as it is wide open following the Robinson trade, but it seems expectations for Croskey-Merritt may need to be tempered early in the season after they went sky high in August.
