In some ways, the weeks leading up to training camp are more important for players than the Washington Commanders' offseason program. Head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters strived to ensure this doesn't become an unnecessary complication for the 2025 rookie class.
The hard work already put in cannot be undone. High standards must be maintained. This is not a vacation. It's a time to reflect, rest, retool, and improve before things get more intense over the summer.
It's a new experience for Washington's rookie class. This is their first NFL offseason, where jobs and depth chart positions are on the line. Most of them have started extremely well, but complacency must not become an issue.
This was a topic discussed by Quinn. The respected figure revealed that individual meetings had been held with every first-year pro. Peters was also in attendance, which was designed to lay out expectations and get a feel for where each player is at this early stage of their development.
We had a one-on-one meeting over the last week. Where are they? How's it been? And going through that process, what does the next 40 days look like? If you're already coming in with ideas and thoughts about what you want to get done, you're already moving forward.Dan Quinn via Commanders.com
This meticulous planning is something that's become synonymous with the Commanders since Quinn and Peters took charge. They leave nothing to chance. They have a professional purpose that resonates well with the modern-day player. And the early returns are there for all to see.
At the same time, the Commanders' coaches and front-office personnel can only do so much. They can provide advice, training programs, and even keep up to date with each player during their time away from the team. But when push comes to shove, it all comes down to how badly they want it.
The Commanders have built a strong-willed group. Washington's rookie contingent needs to display the correct work ethic and desire to get better. Anyone that doesn't is going to get found out at training camp quickly, especially competing against veterans who won't be giving up their respective spots without a fight.
Considering the expectations placed on the Commanders after their sensational run to the NFC Championship in Year 1 under Quinn's exceptional guidance, there is no room for passengers. This isn't college anymore.
The gauntlet has been laid down. If the team's rookie stars respond positively, the Commanders will be in good shape.
