Commanders hire first member of David Blough's staff as the new offensive coordinator, and it directly impacts Jayden Daniels

The Washington Commanders were quick to fill the offensive coordinator position once they moved on from Kliff Kingsbury, and now they had to fill out the rest of the staff.

David Blough was promoted to offensive coordinator for the first time in his career, and the Commanders have to surround him with support on the staff. They held interviews with top QB coach options around the league and finally made a hire.

Jayden Daniels will now be working with D.J Williams as the new QB coach for the Commnaders.

Commanders hire D.J. Williams as the new QB coach

Blough had to find a replacement to fill his prior position as the QB coach, and it's a critical role to fill with a direct impact on Daniels' development. The Commanders interviewed other candidates like Mike Bercovici, who worked with Daniels at Arizona State, but decided to hire D.J. Williams from the Atlanta Falcons.

Williams is, in fact, the son of Washington legend Doug Williams, who currently holds an executive position with the Commanders. Williams has worked with Michael Penix Jr. since they drafted him in 2024 as his QB coach. Now, he gets to work with another top quarterback from the 2024 NFL Draft class. The Falcons made their own coaching changes, so Williams was free to explore outside opportunities with the next head coach and offensive coordinator likely bringing in their own staff. Williams is another young coach who hasn't been in the league long, but now he joins the Commanders' youth movement, which was very much needed.

Should fans worry about the younger coaches?

The Commanders are reaching uncharted territory, going from Kliff Kingsbury, who has been around for a long time and has done it all in the NFL, to coaches who are new to it all. This was something that was needed, though. Younger minds and fresher ideas to keep up with the modern game, and everything the Commanders did looked old and slow last year.

The team needed to get younger on the roster and the coaching staff, and they certainly have on offense through the coaching cycle. The defensive coordinator hire could be the opposite, and an experienced big-name coordinator, with Dan Quinn as the head coach overseeing both sides. We already know Daniels will give his thoughts and inputs to the coaching staff, and Blough needs a solid hire while he integrates his new offense into the team. Now, Peters has to get to work and continue to build the roster for success. It'll also be worth monitoring if Brian Johnson and Anthony Lynn stay on the staff as experienced coaches or move on to somewhere else in the league.
