Commanders left in limbo as Kendrick Bourne decision drags on

The Washington Commanders welcomed veteran wide receiver Kendrick Bourne into the building for an official visit on Tuesday. Most fans thought a deal would be announced soon after, but things might not be that clear-cut.

Adam Peters only took five receivers onto his 53-man roster. This was a telltale sign that the Commanders would be on the lookout for another experienced presence to give quarterback Jayden Daniels a helping hand. And the general manager's previous connection to Bourne meant that it wasn't too difficult to connect the dots.

Excitement grew after Bourne left his meeting with the San Francisco 49ers without an agreement in place. However, the fact that he was only listed as a tryout on Washington's transaction wire burst the bubble in the short term.

Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network provided some additional clarity on the situation. The respected insider revealed that Bourne has elected to sit out this week's action to weigh his options about whether Washington or San Francisco is the best fit at this stage of his career. And that could legitimately go either way as things stand.

The Commanders have been left in limbo, to a certain extent. Peters isn't one for waiting too long, and he's got confidence in the options already around. Bourne will probably make his decision one way or another at the start of next week, but Washington will likely have contingency plans in place if he goes back to the Niners — the place where he started his NFL journey as an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Washington.

Bourne is probably mulling over his potential role with each club and the money on the table. He'd be nothing more than a depth piece in Washington, so there's a good chance of more playing time in San Francisco. At the same time, the allure of playing with Daniels and immersing himself in the team's supreme culture shift under head coach Dan Quinn is a tempting proposition for anybody.

Having another dependable weapon is only going to help Washington's cause. Whether that's Bourne or someone else is irrelevant; the Commanders won't stop looking if he decides San Francisco is a more desirable destination.

Until then, it's a waiting game.
