Commanders RB Brian Robinson released from hospital following shooting

Just one day following an attempted robbery in which he was shot twice , Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson was released from the hospital on Monday. ESPN's Adam Schefter had previously reported the incident as an apparent carjacking attempt.

Robinson was shot early Sunday evening in Washington, D.C. and on Monday morning, posted to Instagram with a positive update, writing "Surgery went well! Thanks for the prayers! God is Great!"

According to reports, the 23-year-old was shot in the glute and lower leg and suffered non-life threatening injuries, and hasn't been ruled out yet for the 2022 season. ESPN's John Keim wrote Tuesday morning that the shooting occurred shortly before 6 p.m. ET in the 1000 block of H Street Northeast when the running back had gone out to get something to eat.

"When police arrived on the scene, they located Robinson, who was suffering from 'a couple gunshot wounds to his lower extremities,' according to Dustin Sternbeck, director of communications for the Metro Police Department in Washington. Robinson was treated by paramedics at the scene and transported immediately to a hospital," Kein wrote. "Sternbeck said police have identified two potential suspects and recovered a firearm a short distance from where the shooting occurred. According to the police report, the incident was described as aggravated assault. ... According to the report, Robinson wrestled away a handgun from one assailant but was shot by the other, who also was using a handgun. Both suspects are believed to be teenagers; the Metro Police Department released photos of the alleged suspects on its Twitter feed Monday night. The investigation remains ongoing."

The third-round pick of the 2022 draft led the SEC in rushing touchdowns (14) in 2021 and registered 1,343 rushing yards, 35 receptions, 296 receiving yards and two scores through the air in his final year at Alabama. In 45 college games over five seasons, Robinson rushed for 2,704 yards and 29 touchdowns, averaging 5.0 yards per carry.

If Robinson is placed on the non-football injury list, he would be required to miss the first four games of the season. Washington opens up its 2022 campaign against the Jacksonville Jaguars at 1 p.m. ET on Sept. 11.
