Commanders rookie exploding at minicamp threatens to flip entire depth chart

The Washington Commanders put first-year players through their paces at rookie minicamp. This was their first taste of what it takes to succeed in the pros. It also saw a couple of fresh faces make their presence felt to leave a positive impression.

One, in particular, threatens to shake up the running back depth chart considerably if the same trend continues.

Jacory Criskey-Merritt is being touted as a late-round steal. The seventh-round selection has the explosiveness, athleticism, and aggression to slot seamlessly into offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury's strategy. He went under the radar after having his 2024 eligibility revoked by the NCAA after just one contest with the Arizona Wildcats, which could work in Washington's favor when push comes to shove.

After all, everything worked out well in the end.

Jacory Croskey-Merritt could surge up Commanders' RB depth chart quickly

Croskey-Merritt is eager to make up for lost time. He feels aggrieved, which should provide the player with enough motivation to potentially find a role for himself in Washington. Based on the reports from those in attendance, the backfield threat got off to a good start.

The No. 245 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft was reportedly sharp over the two-day minicamp. Croskey-Merritt showcased his value as a slashing running back and also displayed his improved pass-catching prowess to further catch the eye. There is a long way to go and a lot of hard work ahead, but this is a strong first step.

There is a chance for Croskey-Merritt to make his way up the depth chart quickly. The Commanders' rushing attack became too dependent on quarterback sensation Jayden Daniels down the stretch and into the postseason. That's not a bad contingency plan, but it cannot be the standard moving forward.

Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler are getting another shot. Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr. got new deals this offseason after flashing when called upon in 2024. All four are out of contract in 2026, so Croskey-Merritt could shake things up enough to become a long-term piece of the puzzle.

The Commanders were suitably impressed by Croskey-Merritt during their comprehensive pre-draft assessments. Taking things gradually remains the preferred path, but don't be surprised if the first-year pro forces his way into Washington's plans much sooner than originally anticipated.
