Contract detail emerge for two Vikings veterans, including Adam Thielen taking a team-friendly pay cut
Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

When it comes to building a roster, the Minnesota Vikings have had to rely a little too much on veterans. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has done a really good job of maneuvering the salary cap with having more veteran contract due to the lack of success in the NFL Draft during his first two years.

Two of the veterans the Vikings added over the last few weeks were quarterback Carson Wentz and wide receiver Adam Thielen. We knew that Wentz's deal was going to be close to the veteran minimum from a salary cap perspective, and Thielen was discussing a pay cut.

The Star Tribune's Ben Goessling got the contract details for both players, and it's going to be important for maximizing the roster this year and beyond.

Minnesota Vikings contract details

Carson Wentz

The Vikings decided to sign Wentz when the Sam Howell experiment didn't work out. In trading Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles, they needed a quarterback and luckily the Vikings didn't have to overpay for Wentz.

This is a very reasonable number that is about $300k higher than what Howell's cap hit would be, and it gives the Vikings a significant upgrade at a position that they hopefully won't have to use. Plus, Wentz can be an asset to J.J. McCarthy as a former top 10 overall pick at the position.

Adam Thielen

The Thielen contract is a little more generous for the Vikings. He was set to have a salary cap hit of $7 million, but that number has shrunk by nearly $2.5 million.

Going into this season, Thielen had no guaranteed money. He gets $1 million in a bonus, and can earn up to $5 million in total. That is still a good deal for who Thielen is, and it gives the Vikings more wiggle room this year, and hopefully roll that money into next season.
