Cornerback Jermod McCoy to Meet with the Miami Dolphins

Jermod McCoy, the former Tennessee Volunteer cornerback, is opting not to work out at the NFL Combine. He is still there to interview with clubs, including the Miami Dolphins, today and potentially tomorrow. The Miami Dolphins have been linked to the defender, likely because they currently lack talent at this position.

Jermod McCoy suffered a torn ACL late in the 2024 season. He was expected to return for a late push or playoffs in 2025, but had never been upgraded to playing in a game. Speculation only: this was likely his decision not to risk injury, as he was planning to opt into the 2026 NFL Draft. McCoy entered the 2025 season as the top cornerback on the NFL media scouts’ boards. Though some people do not include injuries when grading a player, it is definitely worrisome that McCoy has not played in a football game and will not be doing intense workouts over a year after his injury.

Why is he deciding not to participate in the drills? This is where speculation can potentially hurt his stock.

He practiced with the Tennessee Volunteers throughout gameweek for about 6 weeks, in both limited and full capacity. This signals his injury is fully healed, but his decision not to work out at the 2026 NFL combine also indicates he is either at a high risk of reinjury or his recovery severely hindered his athletic ability.

The Combine drills include multiple long sprints, hip flipping drills, and footwork, which all require a lot of stretch and friction on the knees and ankles.

With all the negatives I have listed, McCoy is still a stellar football player on film. He would instantly be the best cornerback profile for the Miami Dolphins, barring an unexpected sign or trade of a star. He displayed elite-level athleticism, ball skills, and man coverage ability in 2024. He is very well spoken in interviews with public media.

Miami has been consistent in drafting very injured players for their potential. Things may be different this time around with a new regime, but if the front office feels he is worthy of a top 11 draft pick, fans will need to put their faith in the first-round pick. He is an intriguing player, especially given how he recorded 4 pass breakups and 4 interceptions in his 2024 campaign.
