Courtland Sutton has been the leader of Denver’s receiving corps for eight years. Coming out of Southern Methodist, Sutton never broke into the elite category, but always put together strong performances. Unfortunately, Denver’s offense is changing, and Sutton may not have as many targets as he’s used to. Is it time to forget about Sutton, or should fantasy football players still draft him?
Sutton’s stats from 2024 have a huge range. He scored as many as 29.7 fantasy points and as few as 3.6 points in the same season. The same can be said about his yardage, since he did have three games over 100 yards as well as some low-yardage games. In fact, he failed to get at least 70 yards in seven of the games he played.
Thanks to his good hands, Sutton has emerged as one of the more reliable pass catchers in today’s game. The numbers show that he really became more of a short-yardage receiver as the season went on, though. His longest catch was 37 yards until Week 18. There were plenty of games where he had a decent amount of catches, but that didn’t translate into yards. Examples would be:
–7 catches in Week 3 with 68 yards
-5 catches in Week 16 with 50 yards
-5 catches in Week 17 with 55 yards
Even though he is still a talented pass catcher, Sutton’s number may be dropping this season. His teammate, Marvin Mims Jr., ended up finishing the season with much better numbers than Sutton did. As a result, he might be getting a big half of the target share, leaving fewer opportunities for Sutton. He can still be great for moving the chains and picking up tough first downs, but Sutton will probably have worse numbers by fantasy football standards.
That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be drafted, though. Fantasy Pros currently has Sutton ranked as the 26th best receiver in football, ahead of DK Metcalf , Xavier Worthy, and D.J. Moore. Sutton’s numbers might not live up to those of the players named after him, but they all should be taken around the same time. If possible, it’s better to get a WR2 ahead of these guys so you don’t have to rely on them. As a WR3 or bench receiver, though, Sutton should do nicely.
