Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys got back on track in Week 5 of the 2025 NFL season, jumping to 2-2-1 under first-year coach Brian Schottenheimer after a 37-22 win over Justin Fields and the New York Jets. Now, the Cowboys will look to make it two straight wins in Week 6 when they travel to Charlotte to take on Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers.

Dallas has featured one of the NFL’s top offenses through the first five weeks, averaging a league-leading 406.6 yards per game. While Prescott has played a major role in that success, averaging 272.2 passing yards per game, the rushing attack has been just as valuable. After Rico Dowdle’s departure to Carolina in free agency, the Cowboys added Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders to the backfield and drafted Jaydon Blue out of Texas.

Williams has been the workhorse for the Cowboys’ running game, recording 79 carries for 447 yards, third most in the NFL, and five touchdowns, tied for second. Sanders has also been productive in limited action, totaling 20 carries for 117 yards and one score. However, after playing in each of the first four games, he did not see the field against the Jets due to a knee and ankle issue.

But on Friday, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones revealed that Sanders’ injuries are more serious than initially believed, ruling the former Penn State Nittany Lions running back out for the season. As a result, Blue, who was inactive for the first four games, is expected to take on a larger role moving forward.

"Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones on @1053thefan said Miles Sanders (knee/ankle) is out for the season," The Athletic's Jon Machota wrote on X. "Rookie RB Jaydon Blue is now officially Dallas’ No. 2 back."

Despite the injury, Jones also revealed his excitement to see the rookie running back get more chances.

“We’re so fired up about what Jaydon Blue can do for this offense,” Jones said.

The Cowboys will face the Panthers on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at Bank of America Stadium on Fox.
