Cowboys Awaiting Punishment Decision After Jaxson Dart Incident

Jaxson Dart and the New York Giants looked to bounce back from a disappointing season in 2025, one where they finished with a 4-13 record and missed out on the NFL Playoffs. And on Sunday night, the Giants opened the 2026 NFL season with a Week 1 matchup against Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys

With 9:38 remaining in the first quarter, after stopping the Cowboys on their first drive, New York had the ball on their own 41-yard line, facing a 2nd-and-10 after a Dart incompletion. But after snapping the ball, the former Ole Miss quarterback couldn’t find anyone open, only to scramble out to his left for a gain of 22 yards, picking up the first down and then some.

But at the end of the play, after Dart ran out of bounds, Dallas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown laid a hard hit on the quarterback, sending Dart flying toward the bench. And the officials called Overshown for unnecessary roughness, giving New York an extra 15 yards.

With his late hit on Dart, Overshown can likely expect a fine coming his way. The NFL reviews every play for potential fines, and typically, players are charged up to $11,941 for a first late hit penalty, which can increase to $17,911 upon a second offense within the same season.

In 2025 alone, Cowboys players were hit with 25 different fines for a grand total of $298,384. And in last year’s Week 11 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, Overshown was penalized $8,166 for another late hit. That marked the former Texas Longhorns star’s first and only fine of his young NFL career.

Only one Dallas player was fined during the preseason as well, when running back Malik Davis was charged $6,735 for an illegal use of the helmet. No NFL players were fined for a late hit in the preseason.
