Cowboys’ Brian Schottenheimer declares left tackle competition over

After missing the playoffs for a second straight season, the Dallas Cowboys are entering 2026 looking to change their fortune. To find true success, the Cowboys must ensure quarterback Dak Prescott has enough time to operate in the pocket.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer entered training camp determined to find the best answer at left tackle for that very reason. But it didn’t take long for him to realize Tyler Guyton was the correct choice, via Kevin Patra of NFL.com.

“We’re gonna keep him at starting left tackle right now,” Schottenheimer said of Guyton. “We talked to Nate (Thomas). Nate needs to show us a little bit more consistent play to push for that. I know we told you guys about the rotation, so Tyler will stay at left tackle. Excited to see how Nate handles that challenge. Tyler’s playing really, really well.”

Guyton’s competition was Nate Thomas, a seventh-round pick back in 2024. While he appeared in 17 games for the Cowboys in 2025, starting four, Schottenheimer and company still want to see Thomas further develop before giving him more responsibilities.

As for Guyton, the now starting left tackle has appeared in 25 games over his two years in Dallas, starting 21. He started 10 games for the Cowboys in 2025 although injuries took a major bite out of his campaign. Furthermore, Guyton’s 57.5 grade from Pro Football Focus ranked 71/89 tackles.

Still, it’s clear Schottenheimer sees the upside in the left tackle. Now, Guyton must prove to be a consistent force and help the offense at large move forward.
