Cowboys Camp Notebook: Coach Details 1 Simple Thing Joe Milton Needs
Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Joe Milton got his feet wet in Brian Schottenheimer's system in the 31-21 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Rams, and he was a little up and down.

After good days in training camp, the time came for Joe to put everything he had learned from practice and do it in a real game. Yes, there were early nerves and excitement, which were clearly evident, but Milton did eventually settle into the game and made some good throws.

Still very much a work in progress, Milton didn't have the type of game many had hoped for, but as offensive coordinator Klayton Adams states, the way forward with Joe is a rather simple one.

“I think we just keep coaching him and continually put him in situations where he's got to make decisions,” Adams said. “I think that always the first preseason game for every player, especially in a new system, you got a heightened sense of awareness and probably a little bit of anxiety. I think you saw throughout the game that he did calm down, and we believe in what he can do, and I think it's just really just about reps.”

Now that Milton has gotten that first game out of the way, the hope is that he will find his groove a lot quicker against the Baltimore Ravens and be able to run the offense a little more efficiently.

Was there progress in Tuesday's workout back in Oxnard? Some Cowboys Camp Notes ...

Fittingly, the player wearing the number three had the best play of the day, as George Pickens highlighted his contested catch ability in team drills.

Pickens had already put together some good days in his first raining camp with the Cowboys, but hadn't flashed his contested catch ability that made him a perfect trade option for Dallas to pair with CeeDee Lamb. Not anymore.

More details on the play and some of the other notable moments from Tuesday's practice:

Would-Be Sacks: Donovan Ezeiruaku, Kemon Hall and Kenneth Murray all got to the QB, showing that coordinator Matt Eberflus is working on bringing pressure from everywhere.

Javonte Williams may have "had his best day.': Williams has often taken the first-team reps in camp, and according to the team site as on top of his game on Tuesday.

Safety First: Donovan Wilson and Malik Hooker both performed like ballhawks on this day, with Wilson forcing a fumble and powerfully busting up a potential Jake Ferguson catch from Dak Prescott. ... and with Hooker grabbing a pick off Dak.

Injury Update: Tyler Guyton (knee) is taking part in walkthroughs, per Schottenheimer. no timeline given, but strong progress. "The way he's attacking rehab is unusual for a second-year player, and I'm proud of him,'' the coach said. ... Jaydon Blue (heel) did not work today ... Payton Turner being checked on by the medical staff. ... Micah Parsons was present but did not work.

Milton "was seen often going through his reads and taking what the defense was giving him; and that's something Brian Schottenheimer and the Cowboys hope transfer to the next outing — versus the Ravens,'' per DallasCowboys.com.

We saw Trey Lance struggle in his first preseason game last year and gradually got better with each game. The hope is that Joe follows suit.

With just one regular season game in his rookie year, Milton doesn't have a lot of experience to bank on with live bullets flying, so as Adams says, just getting him as many reps as possible is the best thing for him.

It is a learning experience, and we expect Milton to fare a little better at AT&T Stadium than he did at SoFi.

Why? The more reps the better.
