The Pittsburgh Steelers fell to the Kansas City Chiefs 29-10 on Christmas Day with an embarrassing performance offensively.
The offense managed just one touchdown in the blowout win as Pittsburgh has now lost three in a row and given up a two-game lead they enjoyed in the division just three weeks ago.
There's lots of blame to go around, and no one would know that more than defensive tackle Cam Heyward, who didn't hold back after the game when he said, "When 10 guys do their job and one doesn't, we are screwed."
He was referring to the defense, but, according to former NFL wideout and Hall of Famer Terrell Owens it could apply on offense too.
Owens criticized Steelers wideout George Pickens for running poor routes. Owens replied to Heyward's post on X, "Same on offense as well when you got #14 not running his routes causing INTs."
Owens refers to the interception Russell Wilson threw on a deep ball to tight end Pat Freiermuth down the middle of the field in the end zone. On the play, Pickens was lined up to the far left on single coverage and the safety audibled to the corner that he would help out in coverage on Pickens.
Unfortunately for the Steelers, Pickens quit on the play and did not run a route, instead just standing there engaged with the corner. That freed up the safety, Justin Reid to disengage and meet Freiermuth in the end zone for the interception.
It was a great play design, but only if Pickens runs a route to bring Reid to the sideline. After the game, Wilson acknowledged Pickens was supposed to do something else on the play.
"Yeah, you know, I think he was going to go vertical, but at the end of the day it can't happen, it’s on me," Wilson said. "I was trying to give Pat [Freiermuth] a chance. He's done a good job for us down in the red zone, and they made a good play."
Pickens has been criticized multiple times this season for lack of effort on plays, and this time it cost his team ... again. While the Steelers are mired in a three-game losing streak and limping into the playoffs, they can't afford mistakes.
