FRISCO - Once the Dallas Cowboys head coaching search was over, with Jerry and Stephen Jones closing the Friday night deal with in-house candidate Brian Schottenheiemer, Jerry got a chance to eavesdrop on “Schotty” making phone calls to his family
On Monday here at The Star, Schottenheimer took the stage for his first program as he leaps from being the offensive coordinator here the last two years to being the man in charge.
“He turned around and called his mama,” Jerry said from the stage, “And I heard him talk to his mama and say to her, “I’m gonna get what daddy didn’t get a chance to get…a Super Bowl.”
“Schotty,” 51, has a lengthy résumé as a coordinator, but this will be his first job as a head coach.
A protege of departed head coach Mike McCarthy and the son of legendary coach Marty Schottenheimer, Brian becomes the 10th head coach in Dallas history… and with his family looking on (including wife Gemmi and mom Pat) he showed a great deal of emotion when discussing the job, his players and his late father.
Schottenheimer, who comes to the head coach role with the thumbs-up endorsement of locker-room leader Dak Prescott - "He'll be ready for the next step,'' Prescott recently said, "he has the right personality and brain'' - believes the teachings of his father will be foundational
Indeed. In addition to calling him wife, his mom (and Dak), the new coach shared another Friday night feel.
“I’m so honored to be sitting in this chair. I couldn’t speak (when the Joneses told him he’s the guy) and immediately I saw his dad’s face and thought how proud he would be.”
