Cowboys provide season-ending injury update that will give rookie a major opportunity starting in Week 6

The Dallas Cowboys are making a big decision at running back, according to EVP Stephen Jones. Running back Miles Sanders is out for the season, Jones announced on 105.3 The Fan on Friday. That means he will land on season-ending Injured Reserve due to a knee/ankle injury.

The news means fifth-round rookie running back Jaydon Blue—who made his NFL regular season debut last weekend—will take over as the No. 2 in the running back depth chart behind starter Javonte Williams.

The unfortunate injury update indirectly answers one of the most pressing questions for Cowboys Nation, which was how involved would Blue be moving forward? Now we know, though expect Williams to remain the offense's "bell cow," as head coach Brian Schottenheimer labeled him earlier in the week.

Miles Sanders played four games for the Cowboys this season and rushed 20 times for 117 yards and a touchdown.

Other notes on Cowboys' injury report

  • CeeDee Lamb and KaVontae Turpin will be out, making Ryan Flournoy and Jalen Tolbert the expected starters at wide receiver on Sunday.
  • Jack Sanborn (concussion) was also ruled out, opening the door for rookie linebacker Shemar James to continue to prove himself. Schottenheimer praised his work on defense earlier in the week.
  • Starting offensive linemen Tyler Guyton and Tyler Smith are questionable and trending toward playing.
  • Cornerback Caelen Carson stacked three full practices, making him a prime candidate to be activated off of Injured Reserve ahead of the Panthers matchup. WR Jonathan Mingo, also on IR, missed Thursday and Friday after practicing Wednesday.
