Brian Schottenheimer's first offseason as an NFL head coach is underway, and the Dallas Cowboys have been put through their paces at The Star as OTAs have begun.
With an emphasis on running the football, the Cowboys will look to establish and then dominate the line of scrimmage, but this can be challenging to practice when current NFL rules limit contact at this time of year.
So, how can Schottenheimer get his team playing the way he wants at this early stage of the offseason, and more importantly, how can they practice it?
"We're going to be a physical football team, but the league has it set to where it's hard to practice that,” Schottenheimer said. “The thing I'm most proud of over the first week of phase three and being on the grass is the effort and the intensity of everybody.
"We call it the transition, so when a ball is thrown, watching the defensive lineman transition and go running, watching the skilled players cover down, the offensive line like that transition is different and it's unique. We're proud of it.
"I told the players that's the standard and we're going to uphold that standard.”
In other words, effort.
The want and willingness to fight through until the end of the play is what Schottenheimer has been pleased with.
Playing with non-stop effort takes zero talent, and it is a mindset that Schotty clearly wants his team to have.
Being physical is great, but the want to finish a play, and do it right, with energy and drive feels like it will be a key ingredient of the 2025 Cowboys.
Yes, it is early, but with Dallas' "transition" in a good place, training camp can't come quick enough so we can see how this "effort" translates with pads on.
