Cowboys Sign Captain America and Assign Legendary Jersey

The Dallas Cowboys nailed their 2025 NFL Draft plan by staying true to their board, picking the best available player at crucial positions, and most noticeably, targeting high-character individuals who have leadership intangibles.

One of those prospects who checks all the boxes is linebacker Shemar James, Dallas' fifth-round pick out of Florida.

At this week's rookie minicamp at The Star, James and the rest of the rookies received their offseason jersey numbers. These may not stick, but they're something the players can get excited about as they officially enter the NFL.

James took to social media to ring in his new digits (he wore No. 6 last season with the Gators).

At the linebacker position, this number holds significant weight with Cowboys Nation.

Fan-favorite Sean Lee played linebacker and wore No. 50 in Dallas from 2010-2020 and is regarded as one of the best linebackers in franchise history.

His career may not have lived up to his complete athletic potential due to injuries, but every time he stepped on the field the Cowboys knew he would bring energy, toughness, and leadership at the center of the defense.

This earned Lee the nickname "Captain America".

Now, James is being passed the shield.

Leading up to the Draft, one scout nailed their analysis of James' character, even hinting at his new nickname before they knew what team he'd land with.

"Captain America. Phenomenal human being. I can see him being a CEO of a company one day. Just a solid consistent player."

Both James and Lee were captains of their college teams, and the second they entered the NFL, they meant business.

Although he has room to grow athletically, the Cowboys coaching staff is already seeing flashes of James' toughness and energy at minicamp.

James will look to continue proving his worth at camp as he plays in one of the team's more experienced units. Dallas will wait on the injury recovery of DeMarvion Overshown, but signed veteran free agents Jack Sanborn and Kenneth Murray Jr. in the meantime this offseason.

The rookie James will also be tasked with living up to his jersey number if he makes the team and claims the "Captain America" comparisons.
