Cowboys’ Stephen Jones confirms ‘active’ trade, free agent talks

The Dallas Cowboys are just over one month away from kicking off their 2026 NFL season, currently taking part in training camp. The Cowboys are looking to fill out their roster over the last few weeks of the offseason as they try to bounce back from two straight seasons of missing the playoffs.

Recently, Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas Morning News made it clear that Cowboys exec Stephen Jones is still scouring the market for potential additions ot the roster.

“Cowboys co-owner Stephen Jones said on a team broadcast of Saturday’s practice that the Cowboys not only remain interested in more additions to the roster, but they remain active, too. Jones said they’ve talked with other teams about potential trade options, as well as veteran free agents,” reported Hoyt.

Hoyt advised fans to “keep an eye on edge rusher as a potential place for an addition,” also noting that “The Cowboys are optimistic about the progression the defensive backs and linebackers have made in training camp.”

Defense was the Cowboys’ Achilles heel throughout last season, as Dallas struggled mightily on that side of the ball throughout the regular season despite production from Dak Prescott and the offense. The Cowboys made strides to address that issue this offseason, using both of their first-round draft picks on defense, including drafting safety Caleb Downs out of Ohio State.

Still, some big names remain on the free agent market as the season approaches, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see Dallas make a splash in that department, or in the trade market, echoing their trade of Micah Parsons shortly before the season began last year.

The Cowboys will kick off their regular season on September 13 vs the New York Giants.
