Daboll Reveals Insight on Giants' Draft Process
Danielle Parhizkaran/NorthJersey.com / USA TODAY NETWORK

The New York Giants have a pivotal decision waiting for them with the No. 3 pick, as two of quarterback Shedeur Sanders, two-way star Travis Hunter, and Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter will be available.

The decision to take a quarterback or not could dominate the discussion, and parsing between two blue-chip prospects isn’t an easy conversation, either. As such, there’s no guarantee that there’s any consensus within the building.

It’s clear that general manager Joe Schoen will have the conviction to make the final call if need be. But will he have to use that trump card? Will owner John Mara put his thumb on the scale?

New York won’t publicly say that Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll disagree on the team’s direction in Round 1. And there isn’t necessarily any reason to believe there is a disagreement! Nevertheless, Daboll revealed the Giants’ approach to the pre-draft process.

“Our scouts and Joe have been doing a great job. I would say the process has been excellent every year,” Daboll said.

“There is really good communication, and not just with the quarterbacks, with each position. It's okay to disagree. You're not going to be disagreeable. Everybody has thoughts and opinions of what they evaluate and what they see.

“There is great conversation. I mean, I really enjoy our process of how we do it with the assistant coaches, area scouts, national scouts, sometimes the pro scouts, with Joe, myself, people that are kind of in Joe's leadership group, our coordinators.”

Obviously, it’s the general manager’s job to pick the players and the coach’s job to put them in position to win. Teams across the league, though, have different power structures, giving coaches de facto front office power or keeping the two separated. With their jobs intertwined, it’s safe to assume New York’s effort is a collaborative one.

“There is a lot of good give and take, and at the end of the day when you're drafting a player, everybody is on board with who you draft and the process which we go through.”
