The Packers escaped an emotional Sunday night in Dallas with a 40-40 tie, in Micah Parsons’ return to take on his former team, but it was Dak Prescott who took aim at Green Bay’s defense and exposed a major flaw in the process.
While coordinator Jeff Hafley’s defense failed to generate much noticable pressure on Prescott all night, the Cowboys’ quarterback took aim at a secondary that struggled mightily at preventing explosive plays.
After Green Bay released veteran cornerback Jaire Alexander this offseason, consistent cornerback play became a worry, and it was exposed against Dallas.
According to Pro Football Focus, Prescott posted 99 passing yards on deep completions, and worse yet, Prescott finished the game with 195 air yards, meaning that the majority of the Cowboys’ big plays didn’t come after the catch but by receivers getting behind the secondary or Prescott throwing over them.
Whether it is by improving the pass rush, or figuring out a way to provide more safety help over the top, Hafley and the Packers will need to be better defending the vertical passing game, especially in a division that houses Jared Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown, and a conference where Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Baker Mayfield and emerging rookie Emeka Egbuka are likely standing in the way on the road to a Super Bowl.
