Dallas Cowboys Announce Massive News About Dak Prescott’s Future, Playoff Performance Could Play Major Factor

Dak Prescott ranks in the top five in several major categories for NFL QBs and was the frontrunner for MVP for most of the year.  He heads into Sunday’s critical Wilcard Round matchup against the Green Bay Packers with 4,516 yards (3rd), 36 touchdowns (1st), 9 interceptions and a QB rating of 72.5 (2nd).

While Prescott’s postseason performance could play a factor in his future, it’s hard to see the Dallas Cowboys moving their starting franchise QB after a prolific regular season, even if Dallas is upset early in the playoffs.

But with Jerry Jones running the show, it’s hard to ever be certain. There were legitimate questions about Mike McCarthy’s future as the Cowboys head coach if his team doesn’t find success in the playoffs.

In early December, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport said, Prescott and the Cowboys are expected to figure out a “rich” contract extension this offseason. The quarterback’s current contract expires in 2024.

On Sunday, just hours before the Cowboys kick off against the Green Bay Packers as significant home favorites, a report surfaced solidifying the organization’s urgency when it comes to inking a new deal with Prescott.

According to a piece released by SI Cowboys Insider Mike FIsher, the team has almost certainly locked themselves in with Prescott as its franchise QB.

But with other major key players coming up on contract years, Prescott’s postseason performance this time around could dictate the number on an extension.

In addition to the Jones family’s faith in Dak as a player and leader, the Cowboys have essentially made their bed in terms of Prescott being this team’s centerpiece for the long term. The already-large commitment will, for cap reasons, almost surely lead to another large commitment in order to not only retain the player but also to spread out his money cap-wise so other roster business – new deals for Micah Parsons and CeeDee Lamb included – can be done.

The debate about “whether he is worth it” will be part of this, and it is understandable; is Prescott really a “top QB”? What’s he done to justify a $50 or $60 million salary? Maybe he should accept a discount that is more team-friendly? What’s he done to set in stone the next big move?

The Dallas Cowboys’ commitment will feel more justified to critics if Dak  Prescott and company knock off with the 7-point underdogs, and if they do it again the following week, and if they … Well, you know.

Jones has acknowledged the MVP talk is nice, but has made it clear he wants to see Prescott lead the team to a Super Bowl, a feat the franchise hasn’t accomplished since 1995 when they beat the Steelers 27-17. W

“I just want him to be a part of having the team to be a Super Bowl quarterback,” Jones said. “The idea of him not being our quarterback hasn’t crossed my mind. I’m here like everybody else wanting him to be the Most Valuable Player in the NFL. We’re trying to win the Super Bowl, and we have a better chance at winning it with him at quarterback playing at that level.”
