Former Alabama Crimson Tide star quarterback Joe Milton is ready to begin the newest chapter in his still-young NFL career. Now with the Dallas Cowboys, Milton has a shot at becoming the team’s QB2, or as the main backup option for Dak Prescott, who is working his way back to full form following an injury debacle.

Milton started his pro career when he was selected in the sixth round (193rd overall) of the 2024 NFL draft by the New England Patriots. However, he only appeared in a game for the Pats in his rookie season, with New England operating mostly with Drake Maye or Jacoby Brissett under center.

Milton opens up about moment he learned trade to Dallas Cowboys

The 25-year-old Milton recently opened up about the time hea learned of his trade to Dallas.

“Was I surprised? Yes,” he said (via Patrik Walker of the Cowboys’ official website). “I kind of woke up around, like, 7 o’clock, to a call and I knew I was getting traded.”

“The only thing I could have done, well, the only thing I did at that moment was to thank God,” Milton said while wearing a trademark smile. “Coming here was a blessing. I didn’t know it was going to be here. … I didn’t know where I was going to end up.

With the Cowboys, Milton is expected to compete against Will Grier for the QB2 role.

Milton’s trade to the Cowboys, while not ideal for his QB1 dreams, offers him a chance to develop in a new football environment and behind a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback.
