Manny Rubio-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys announced in a statement Saturday former linebacker Lee Roy Jordan passed away. He was 84 years old.

"An inspirational leader of the Cowboys first championship teams, Jordan was at the core of the Dallas Cowboys 'Doomsday Defense,' anchoring the middle linebacker spot for 14 years," reads the statement.

Jordan's career with the Cowboys started in 1963 and he never played for another NFL team. He retired in 197 as a five-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion. He's part of the Cowboys' exclusive Ring of Honor.

"With fearless instincts, leadership, and a relentless work ethic, Jordan was the embodiment of the Cowboys spirit," the statement added.

The "relentless work ethic" described in the Cowboys statement is illustrated by the following anecdote from the team's official Ring of Honor site:

"A true student of football, Jordan not only spent hours upon hours watching game film, he once negotiated into his contract to have a projector at his home so he could study opponents while being with his family."

Lee Roy Jordan was a crucial part of the Cowboys' Super Bowl VI win in 1972, when the team held Don Shula's Miami Dolphins to only three points. He was a first-round draft pick after a successful career at Alabama that earned him a place in the College Football Hall of Fame, which inducted him in 1983.
