The Dallas Cowboys announced the death of former linebacker and Ring of Honor member Lee Roy Jordan on Saturday. Jordan, who played for the Cowboys from 1963-76, was 84 years old.

The team announced the news with a statement on social media, praising Jordan's contributions to the defense in the 1960s and '70s, which included three Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl title in January 1972 against the Miami Dolphins.

"With fearless instincts, leadership and a relentless work ethic, Jordan was the embodiment of the Cowboys spirit," the team shared. "Off the field, his commitment to his community was the centerpiece of his life after retiring in 1976. His legacy lives on as a model of dedication, integrity and toughness. Lee Roy Jordan's impact on the game, and on those who knew him will live on forever. Our hearts go out to Lee Roy's family, friends and loved ones."

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Jordan out of the University of Alabama with the sixth overall selection in the 1963 NFL Draft. In Tuscaloosa, he played under head coach Bear Bryant, eventually becoming a national champion in 1961 and a unanimous All-America selection in 1962. With the Crimson Tide, Jordan contributed both at center and linebacker. A native of Excel, Alabama, Jordan earned his place in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1980 and in the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983.

In Dallas, Jordan made an immediate impact as the Cowboys' first rookie starter at middle linebacker. He ranks second in franchise history in career solo tackles with 743. He is also second in assisted tackles and combined tackles. No Cowboys player has had more consecutive starts than Jordan with 154.

In 14 seasons in the NFL, all with the Cowboys, Jordan was a five-time Pro Bowler.

With all of his accolades, Jordan became team owner Jerry Jones' first Ring of Honor selection. He earned his induction in 1989 as the team's seventh member.
